This is a remarkable book that sheds light on how we grow and change through the losses that are an inevitable and necessary part of life. Losses such as our mothers' protection, impossible expectations in relationships, losses of our younger selves and the loss of loved ones through separations and death. We can gain perspective, true maturity and a fuller wisdom about life by reading this book, slowly and thoughtfully. And then keep it to read it again and again. Losses happen and having an understanding helps the process. This book will be on my bookshelf for keeping me healthy in my mind and perceptions of life's losses. ( )

I started this many months ago and kept it in the bathroom to read periodically. It was full of great advice, the best of which was summed up at the end.
"We can't understand our history unless we recognize that it is comprised of both outer and inner realities." ( )

a freudian perspective on psychology for a lay audience. Well written and a pleasure to read, this book is also an excellent introduction to psychodynamic thought for those interested in venturing into Freud's theories. ( )
